2012 Michael Bunn Memorial Rising Star Award
Chatham Eye Associates, P.C.
The Michael Bunn, Sr., Memorial Rising Star Award commemorates Mike who was our very first loan officer when we started the Small Business Assistance Corporation.
Mike was inspirational in getting our organization recognized and trusted by local banks and governmental leaders in the community. He truly believed that entrepreneurship was a positive force for socio-economic change. It is with that spirit that we honor this year’s recipient with this award in his name.
The Rising Star is SBAC’s small business of the year for highest achievement in entrepreneurial success and community service. The 2012 recipient is Chatham Eye Associates, P.C., Doctors Ronald and Russell Dandy.
Presenting the award today is Jane Bunn. We would like to acknowledge the generous donation by Dr. Robert Simmons, Jr. DDS which supports this award.
Board-Certified Ophthalmologists Dr. Ronald Dandy and Dr. Russell Dandy (pictured above) know what it takes to make a family business thrive. SBAC is proud to honor their efforts over the past few years by awarding them SBAC’s Michael Bunn Rising Star Award for 2012.
These twin brothers are the physician-owners of Chatham Eye Associates, P.C. Dr. Ronald Dandy specializes in Vitreo Retinal surgery, and Dr. Ronald Dandy’s focus is cataract and glaucoma surgery and treatment.
The brothers are natives of Savannah, with family and personal connections throughout the region. They give special attention to the needs in our community, and chose to return to Savannah after securing their higher education and training. Their father is a respected, retired Optometrist from Savannah who continues to contribute to the business and the patient base as a diabetic consultant. Even their wives are physicians in the area, making this entire family a driving force for enhanced medical treatment for our citizens.
Dr. Ronald Dandy earned his B.S. degree from Xavier University and medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. After finishing his internship at Emory University, he became the Chief Resident at the Cole Eye Institute in Cleveland. He was also a Surgery-Fellow at Tulane University Health Sciences Center until he and his brother opened their practice in Savannah in 2003.
Dr. Russell Dandy earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Xavier University in New Orleans and went on to earn his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia as well. His internship, residency, and fellowship were all completed in conjunction with Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans. Both doctors are surgeons, Fellowship-trained in the treatment of the leading causes of blindness in this area of the US; mainly Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma, and Cataracts. Each of these ailments occurs largely in elderly patients, a continually growing patient population in the retirement-friendly area around Savannah.
In the mere 10 years the Drs. Dandy have practiced in Savannah, they have grown from their humble beginnings on Waters Avenue to a state of the art, 9,000+sq ft facility on Middleground Rd. in Savannah. That purchase was made possible with funding from BB&T and the SBA 504 Program. Just last year, they purchased a smaller, 2nd location in Bulloch County, also with the aid of BB&T and the SBA 504 Program.
They currently have a patient base of nearly 20,000 customers for which they provide comprehensive medical ophthalmologic care, and employ 9 individuals. Today, Chatham Eye Associates is 1 of only 2 glaucoma specialists in the region and 1 of only 5 vitreo-retinal specialists in the region. In addition, Dr. Russell Dandy is 1 of 2 Fellowship-trained glaucoma surgeons in Savannah.
