Scandalous Beauty Salon
Priscilla Dickerson, Owner & Operator
1407 Waters Avenue, Savannah
(912) 631-1519
Priscilla Dickerson, owner and operator of Scandalous Beauty Salon, did the opposite of most cosmetology majors; she graduated with her barber license first and then later graduated from Savannah Tech’s Cosmetology Program in 1983.
Most cosmologists find creativity as one of their greatest assets. Priscilla is no exception. One may ask what does a guitar; a skate and a snake have to do with haircare and design. Priscilla used those items to accentuate her creative styling skills. In 2008, she won first place in the Fantasy Hair Show using a guitar as her backdrop. In 2005 and 2007, she placed second using a snake and a skate, respectively.
Now a master barber and stylist, she attributes her creative flair and skills to watching her aunt do hair when she was young.
Scandalous Beauty Salon offers a wide range of services which include relaxers, wash and sets, weaving and braiding.
Priscilla used the Small Steps to Success loan program to relocate her business.

John F. Settles, II, Owner
520-528 Martin Luther King Jr., Blvd
Savannah, GA 31401
(912) 247-4868
John Settles, II modified the old cliché “if you are not a part of the solution, you are a part of the problem” to “I see a problem and will provide a solution.” He did so by forming Urban Communities, LLC in Maryland in 2002 to provide affordable housing opportunities for low to moderate income individuals. He accomplished this mission by purchasing, renovating and selling real estate to individuals who could not purchase the property using traditional sources. For example, Mr. Settles may allow “lease to own” options for someone who need to correct some credit issues or for clients who are not able to make the required down payment.
After graduating from college in 1993, John worked for Housing and Urban Development in Washington, DC. As an employee, he observed something that was disturbing enough to motivate him to improve conditions for the less fortunate. He noticed that the real estate needs did not match the funding available for individuals desiring to own this portion of the American Dream. He used Urban Communities to close that gap, thus helping more than two dozen persons become home owners in the Washing ton DC Metro area.
In 2005, he and his wife moved to Savannah, GA where she could be closer to her family. John decided to transfer his business knowledge and skills from Maryland to Savannah. Under the umbrella of Urban Communities, he invested in properties that can easily be converted into rentals or for home ownership.
Looking outside the box, John changed the status quo and gave opportunities to many who needed a second chance.
John became a SBAC client after receiving a HUD Special Purpose Loan to renovate his commercial property on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd for business expansion.

TYLER ROMINGER
TOWNE, INC.
41ST AND LINCOLN ST.
SAVANNAH, GA
(912)443-1388
Tyler Rominger had set a goal for herself when she began in the stylist profession and that was to eventually own her own salon. She had accumulated excellent experience working for the largest salon chain, Van Michael Salon, in Atlanta for ten years. She moved to Savannah and got a job with Liberty Six where she developed a large and loyal clientele and met numerous stylists.
Tyler felt that the time was right to move into her own salon. Tyler and her husband Mcleod approached the Small Business Assistance Corporation for the funding. They began looking for a promising location and found the perfect location at the corner of Lincoln and 41st. The house needed extensive renovation and Tyler was becoming frustrated at seeing her dream so close but still so far. Her loan request was approved by the loan committee of SBAC and work moved forward, although at a slow, slow rate.
Through much perseverance and hair pulling by Mcleod, Tyler’s husband, Towne, Inc. finally opened and began receiving rave reviews for the design of both the salon and the stylists. Towne, Inc. is located at 41st and Lincoln Street and is open six days a week.

ANGELA WILLIAMS
#1 PRIORITY LEARNING ACADEMY
4412 LIBERTY PARKWAY
SAVANNAH, GA 31405
(912) 306-7198
Most people breathe a sigh of relief when their children finally grow up and leave home. And they don’t dare care for any other children. Not so for Ms. Angela Williams, a mother of three, ages 2, 5 and 11. She desired to own a child care center since graduating from high school and in 2006 she became the proud owner of #1 Priority Learning Academy currently located on Liberty Parkway.
This venture started in January 2006, when Ms. Williams opened her business on Palm Avenue in a garage apartment. She was limited to six children but realized the growth potential in providing childcare. To expand her business, she and her fiancé enrolled in the Individual Development Account Program administered by EOA. While in the program, she relocated her business to 4412 Liberty Parkway in West Savannah. Upon completion of the IDA Program, she received a total of $10,000 to upgrade her new location into a group childcare where she is licensed to keep up to 18 children.
Angela offers extensive hours - from 6:30am to 7:00pm. From a standard curriculum, the children learn necessary skills needed to advance once they enroll in public school.
Though quiet, this young lady has not reached the pinnacle of her desires. Her next goal is to add a second shift to her operation. This will give her an additional 18 children to keep during the evening and night hours. Ultimately, she plans to open a non-profit community youth center.
Ms. Williams came to SBAC in December 2007 for additional funding. After utilizing her IDA funds, SBAC loaned her money she needed to complete her leasehold improvement which resulted in her increasing her enrollment from 6 to 18 children. In addition to herself, Angela has one full and one part-time employee who care for the children, whose ages range from 6 weeks to 5 years old.

STEWART’S FISHING CHARTER
JOHN BRAD STEWART
1 HWY 80
SAVANNAH, GA 31410
(912) 656-1868
It’s a fishy job but someone has to do it. That someone is Captain John Brad Stewart, the owner of Stewart’s Fishing Charter. Stewart’s Fishing Charter is a recreational fishing company that carries up to four individuals on an enjoyable fishing trip off the Tybee Island Shore. He offers four and six hour trips for inshore and offshore fishing. For the inshore fish lovers, Captain Stewart will take you about five miles from the dock where you can fish for redfish, trout, flounder, sheephead, whiting and sharks. His offshore excursions take you about 6-18 miles off the beach in 56 – 60 feet of water. Here individuals fish for mackerel, bluefish, jacks, cobia, sea bass, whiting, sharks and other ocean species.
Captain Stewart graduated from Georgia Southern University with a biology degree in Marine Ecology. He immediately hit the waters as an employee for Amick’s Deep Sea Fishing. From there, he gained over 14 years of professional experience with inshore and offshore fishing charters and has acquired over 1,000 USCG days as a deckhand/mate and over 400 days as the captain of a vessel. Since receiving his captain’s license in September 2005, he has retained the position of captain aboard all inshore and offshore charter with four or less people.
Becoming a sea captain is no small task. Captain Stewart had to navigate for 100 hours in Sea School; he had to perform 765 days on the water since the age of 15. Within three years, he had to spend at least 90 of the 765 days sailing on the ocean. Finally, he had to pass a 10 hour Coast Guard Standard Test. Every five years, he has to reapply to maintain his license. This requires him to spend 180 eight hour days on the water within a five year period.
These trips are ideal for the entire family, father/son, male friends, mother/daughter or female friends. Yes women you will enjoy these trips because Captain Stewart will take you to the spot to catch the fish of your choice. But he also does all of the dirty work; he baits the hooks and cleans and bags the fish for you. So women, you can take a relaxing fishing trip, have very limited contact with the fish while, at the same time, impressing your significant other by bring home cleaned, bagged fish-fresh from the ocean.

MRS. T’S BAKED GOODS AND CATERING
TIA THOMPSON
100 EDSEL STREET
RICHMOND HILL, GA
(912 756-4226
Living in a society of quick fixes and microwaving, we often lose sight of the finer things in life, such as desserts just the way mother did it. Mrs. T’s Baked Goods and Catering takes us back to the days of homemade desserts when you bite into a piece of cake and taste not only the butter, sugar, and eggs, but also the love that was poured into it as our mothers and grandmothers measured, mixed, fold, poured, baked and magically, our favorite dessert appeared. Mrs. T does not replace home, but she does “whip up” desserts that make you want to say a bad word if the smallest crumb falls to the ground.
Mrs. T’s Baked Goods and Catering is owned by Ms. Tia Thompson in Richmond Hill, GA – Bryan County. Tia is a full time employee, but her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Harold Thompson, both retired, manage the day to day operations of the business. Usually when you call, the phone is answered by Mrs. Thompson, affectionately known as Mrs. T. Ms T has cooked and baked all of her life, and was professionally trained in home economics. For 20 years, she owned a daycare in Philadelphia where she cooked for the children, as well as sold homemade baked goods as another small business.
We cannot leave Mr. T out of the picture because he also knows his way around the kitchen. On Sunday December 9, 2007, he participated in the Sixth Annual Savannah’s 100 Celebrity Men Who Cook Cook-Off at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront where approximately 100 cooks showed off their prize dishes. Under the dessert category, Mr. Thompson or as the Savannah Herald reported, Reverend George Harold Thompson Sr. won first place with his Bourbon Pecan Pie.
This family complements each other by maximizing the individual gifts which in turns strengthen the entire business. While at home, Tia oversees the entire operation which includes cooking, delivering and all duties as assigned. Ms. T spends most of her time preparing all of those luscious desserts displaying her 50 plus years of experience. Mr. T, when not in the kitchen, is networking. They are members of the Small Business Chamber, eWomen Network and other organizations that provide outreach opportunities.
There are no limits to the desserts that can be ordered from Mrs. T’s. The choices range from the famous red velvet cake to rum, chocolate carrot and even a sock-it-to-me cake all made from “scratch” in Mrs. T’s kitchen. Small Business Assistance Corporation ordered the red velvet cake and it did not hang around the office long. As a result of that order, a second order was placed by another office within one week. If you are not a cake lover, don’t despair, homemade cookies and pies including Mr. T’s award winning Bourbon Pecan Pie are also available. The Thompson’s have landed numerous catering jobs and have received positive feedback as a result of follow-up evaluations. All of these achievements were accomplished within one year, as this business opened in 2007.
Because of the high demand, Mrs. T’s is relocating from the Thompson’s home to a storefront on Edsel Street in Richmond Hill off Hwy 144 near the Ford Plaza. SBAC provided funding for one of the refrigerators that will be housed in their new facility.
Operating hours for Mrs. T’s Baked Goods and Catering are Mon – Fri 7:30am to 6:00pm. For all catering and/or dessert needs with professional service, Mrs. T’s Baked Goods and Catering is the place to call.

In March, SBAC funded the loan for Mr. Ennis to purchase and renovate a gutted truck used as a kitchen by its previous owner. You double your pleasure when dining at Clary’s Café. First of all, you have a choice of two locations - one on Abercorn in the Historic District between Lafayette and Calhoun squares and a second on Habersham Street – a few miles away. The pleasures continue as Clary’s staff provides a combination of good food and excellent customer service that entices even the hardest critics to return again and again.
These full service restaurants are owned by Ms. Patricia Jan Wilson. Jan worked at Clary’s for 10 years prior to purchasing both locations in 2004. She started as a cashier and quickly elevated herself to general manager. Her 30 years of experience in the restaurant business is evidenced in the increased revenue and profits along with her employing 50 to 60 individuals who have worked for her from 2 to 12 years. That is quite an accomplishment in any business, but for the restaurant industry, it displays Jan’s excellent management and employee relations skills.
Clary’s uniqueness includes serving breakfast all day. Clients are not limited to creamy grits, fluffy pancakes, crisp bacon, golden brown sausage and loaded omelets until 10:00 am. One of the breakfast favorites is crab cake benedict which consists of Poached eggs, Canadian bacon and Clary’s Crab Cakes served on toasted English muffin topped with fresh hollandaise sauce with the choice of grits or breakfast potatoes.
“The Oglethorpe” is very popular for the big breakfast lovers. When placing this order, it may be advisable to request a “doggie bag” because this is guaranteed to be two meals in one. A customer will enjoy two large buttermilk pancakes, two eggs to order; bacon, sausage or pit ham, buttered grits or breakfast potatoes, toast or homemade buttermilk biscuits.
With the multi-colored awning shielding them from the sun, many of the Abercorn’s guests savor their meals on the patio. This is an excellent place to enjoy the many lunch items listed on the menu, including the daily specials. The well-liked fresh hamburgers and Ruben sandwiches are favorites for the carb lovers and the spinach and Greek salads for the weight watchers.
Benjamin Griffith and The Coastal Bank partnered with SBAC to provide funding for Jan to expand her business by purchasing equipment, inventory, furniture and fixtures and refinancing existing debt.

We are all familiar with the white trucks carrying the purple and green logo for “FedEx Ground.” Most of these trucks are owned by individuals who are contractors for FedEx to deliver packages to residents and businesses. FedEx Ground is a division of FedEx Corporation with over 70,000 employees and independent contractors. Mr. Paul J. Hawkes Jr, managing member of House of Hawks, LLC recently became one of the independent contractors for this company that delivers a daily average of more than 3.5 million packages.
Mr. Hawkes recently approached SBAC for funding to purchase a truck and route from a previous owner. He was the ideal candidate for this acquisition being that he has driven this truck and route for the past three years as an employee for James Trucking. Mr. Davis, the owner of James Trucking decided that after 12 of operating this truck/route package that he would sell it. The only thing standing between Mr. Hawkes and the ownership of this package was the funding needed to transfer it from Mr. Davis to himself (Mr. Hawkes). December 2007, SBAC approved Mr. Hawkes request and the rest is history. He is driving as before, except now he is driving this long haul route for himself and not Mr. Davis. This must be a great feeling for Mr. Hawkes, a self-employed independent contractor for FedEx Ground. He will continue to drive from the Pooler terminal to the Charlotte, N.C. hub five days per week.
Paul, a retired veteran who drove trucks for the military for 12 years will reap several benefits from FedEx that other truckers and start up businesses will not have.
Mr. Hawkes will receive a maintenance allowance that can be used to offset the increased gas prices that hinder other drivers from maintaining in a negative economy. As a start-up business owner, he does not have to find customers to keep him in business. FedEx has established the route for him which leaves him to being responsible for making the five daily trips from Savannah to Charlotte every day.
The other member of this business entity is Mr. Hawkes’ wife, Ms. Ollette Hawkes who will manage the administrative side of the business.

Dwight is a graduate of Georgia Southern University with a degree in Business Administration. As both partners have basic knowledge of the other’s expertise, the weaknesses of one are overcome by the strengths of the other.
SSIS has several competitors, but has established a competitive edge that sets them apart from their competition. They have purchased A+ insurance that permits them to bid on contracts for larger more established, financial clients. Ms. Langmeier and Mr. Chance also have “state of the art” equipment which allows them to provide efficient service for their clients. They have established themselves in providing a 24 hour turn around policy. From the time a call is made, they guarantee possession of the vehicle within 24 hours as long as they are given its location. A final advantage is that they continue to receive training to improve on their services in order to stay ahead of the competition.
Office hours of operation are Monday – Friday 8:00am to 6:00pm, but the owners are available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Lorri and Dwight approached SBAC requesting funds to purchase equipment and for working capital using the SBA MicroLoan program. With these proceeds, they have secured 10 clients and have several in the pipeline waiting for final decisions.

Standing Ovations whose tag line is “We Dress Your Hair for Success” prides itself on providing haircuts, colors, relaxers and weaving for both children and adults.
Mrs. Henderson is a 1996 graduate of Savannah School of Cosmetology. She worked at various hair salons until 2004 when she opened Standing Ovation on Eisenhower Drive. All this time, as a single mother of two, she built her clientele to over 100 loyal customers from not only the Savannah/Chatham County area, but also Brunswick, GA, Jacksonville, FL and Hilton Head SC. In the latter part of 2007, her landlord sold the building on Eisenhower and forced her to relocate; she was given 60 days to find her new home at 117 Oglethorpe Professional Court huddled between Mall Blvd and Hodgson Memorial, just minutes from her original location.
SBAC assisted by financing this quick move which prevented her from losing the business she had established.
As an Award Winning Stylist, Mrs. Henderson placed first in the “Fantasy Competition” in 2006 which is an annual hair battle consisting of at least 15 other stylists. In 2007 she received the “Platinum Hood Award” for the best hair stylist in Savannah. This stands the reason for her building such a loyal following.

Daniel Ribich has owned and operated A & L Autobody since 1999. Prior to opening his own body shop he worked for many years for J C Lewis Ford of Savannah. Dan was leasing the space since opening and the owner offered to sell him the land and building. The location is excellent, at the corner of Eisenhower and White Bluff, just a short drive to all the major automobile dealerships. This is where Dan gets a lot of his work, as well as, the usual insurance jobs. It is not unusual to see the entire parking lot of his business filled with wrecked cars waiting his magic touch to making them look like new. You never see a customer’s car there for more than a week.
Now that Dan owns the shop and the adjacent property, he now wants to expand the operation. Adding another paint booth to the rear of building is one solution. He also picked up additional parking. So if you are in need of auto body work stop and see Dan Ribich at A & L Autobody.

JENNIFER HALLSEY
224 W. BOLTON STREET
SAVANNAH, GA
912-257-9461
This is a story that tells how a bank, Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and Small Business Assistance Corporation came together to benefit an aspiring entrepreneur. Jennifer Hallsey, like many entrepreneurs, worked for others doing something she enjoyed and realized that she can do it for herself. She went to The Coastal Bank in downtown Savannah and discussed her desires to start her own jewelry manufacturing business bringing with her over five years of experience in the jewelry and gift industry. After an initial review, the bank referred her to SBAC, who after realizing that her request was reasonable, referred her to SBDC for consulting and assistance with writing a business plan. Many people would have disappeared from the mix of referrals, but not Jennifer Hallsey. She worked diligently with Lynn Vos at SBDC for eight weeks and returned to SBAC with a well organized business plan and the desire to make her business a reality. SBAC prepared her package for loan committee review and she was approved. Jennifer is a prime example of how the entire community can bring a young, energetic and intelligent entrepreneur into existence.
Jennifer is a local jewelry maker from Ohio who started Lee Ohio Designs. Lee Ohio Designs is a wholesale distributor of fine handmade paper gifts and jewelry that is dedicated to meeting the needs of sophisticated and selective, often persnickety individuals. Lee Ohio Designs markets to high-end clothing and gift boutiques. She also customizes jewelry for bridal parties, babies and other special purposes.
Jennifer develops and designs all of Lee Ohio Designs products. She orders raw stock and inventory from a variety of sources which allows her to get the best rates. She can in turn effectively market and sell at a lower wholesale price.
Her necklaces, bracelets and earrings are made from the highest quality of Czech and Chinese glass, Austrian Swarovski crystal and semi-precious gemstones. Her pieces can elevate a casual outfit into a stylishly professional look.
She also offers custom note cards such as wedding invitations, birth announcements and thank you cards. Jennifer has the advantage over many of the big companies that produce in large quantities. Her note cards are collages of vintage paraphernalia such as postcards, wallpapers, advertisements and postage stamps. She creatively converts these commonly used items into eloquently unique cards that give her clients that special feeling of exclusiveness instead of mass production – which we find in stores.
Lee Ohio Designs can be purchased at ShopSCAD in Savannah, Gallery by the Sea on Tybee Island, and at Victoria Susan’s in Camden, South Carolina.

Leah Lancaster and Thu Le Tran teamed together to open Red Clover, Inc. This quaint women’s boutique is located at 53 Montgomery Street between Broughton Street and Franklin Square.
They decided to bring a new type of shopping experience to Historic Downtown
Savannah: fashionable, yet affordable clothing for young women. They possess the knowledge and skills needed to reach this goal. For example, Leah has worked as an Associate, Manager and Buyer for Belk and Macey’s for over eight years. She is also a Fashion Design graduate from the University of Georgia. She is armed with the wherewithal needed to buy, mark-up, arrange and mark down inventory. Thu, a designer herself, will display many of her pieces in the store. Leah and Thu will allow other local designers to feature their fashions as well.
In addition to their experience, these ladies fall within the age of their customers, thus making it easy to buy for them. They offer stylish clothes and accessories for women between the ages of 18 and 35. Their inventory covers both business and casual wear that can be worn by the locals, SCAD students and tourists.
The location which was a residence at one time needed to be reconstructed into a retail spot. Leah’s father made many of the fixtures and a construction crew did the major renovations. However, these two resourceful ladies rolled up their sleeves and did most of the cosmetic work to make this a cozy establishment in which to shop.
Their hours of operations are 10:00 am to 6:00 pm – Mondays through Saturdays and 11:00 am – 6:00 pm on Sundays. They can accommodate all shopping needs. If you know what you want and just need to pick it up, Red Clover Inc can help. If you desire to buy for that special someone and don’t know where to start, stop by Red Clover, Inc. SAVANNAH, GA 31405

Recovery Place, Inc., an alcohol and drug treatment and rehabilitative facility serving Savannah and the Coastal Empire, was started by Mr. Wayne Bland in 1985 with three patients, a wing and a prayer and a lot of hope and determination. Mr. Bland’s intent was to provide treatment and assistance to addicts and their families, regardless of insurance, residency and financial status. Recovery Place, Inc. focuses on the desperate need for help of the addict and the people willing to stand by that person as treatment is received.
Recovery Place, Inc. began operations seeing patients and providing group therapy in a small rental unit on the Southside of Savannah. Mr. Bland has grown the business to over 7,000 patients and to include the oversight of Drug Court Programs, DUI Court Programs and the Savannah Behavioral Health Collaborative. With the addition of patients and programs, Recovery Place, Inc. has also tripled its staff and still has a need for addition staff to successful oversee the Health Collaborative Program. This increase in staff and services posed a problem for the business – a shortage of space.
Mr. Bland contacted his bank, The Savannah Bank, with a request to purchase a new building into which he could move his current and expanded operation. The Savannah Bank suggested an SBA 504 loan to minimize the amount of the down payment and to provide 20 year fixed rate financing. Mr. Bland worked with SBAC to obtain SBA approval – which was received in October 2002. Recovery Place, Inc. purchased three condominium units in the heart of the medical district and immediately began renovating the units to suit their purposes. Construction on the new facility was completed in the late Spring, early Summer of 2003. The new facility opened with an expanded staff of professionals offering their expertise to individuals, the court systems, and the health collaborative.
Recovery Place, Inc. stands ready to help addicts and their families lead healthy fulfilling lives. If you want a life affirming experience, stop by the new facility and talk with Mr. Bland about his successes – they are truly inspiring!

Cafe at Wexford is an established upscale restaurant located on the South End of Hilton Head Island. In operation since 1986, Café at Wexford is locally recognized as the premier restaurant for quality food, an intimate atmosphere and excellent service. Islanders themselves, Maureen and Scott Snyder jumped at the opportunity to purchase the restaurant when it went up for sale.
Maureen and Scott had been searching for a small business to purchase. Scott’s vast experience is in the restaurant industry, so Café at Wexford afforded the Snyders not only a business to own, but one that fell within their area of expertise. Timing being everything on Hilton Head Island, the Snyders immediately contacted Lowcountry National Bank who suggested that the Snyders benefit from the long term financing of the SBA 504 program. SBAC began working with the Snyders to prepare an SBA package. The loan was approved and the Snyders were able to close on the purchase in the fall of 2003.
The acquisition of the restaurant allowed the Snyders to give the business the TLC it desperately needed and to begin the process of improving on an already successful venture. Scott now spends his days in the kitchen preparing incredible meals for guests while his mother greets patrons at the door to enthusiastically escort them to tables. Café at Wexford is, now, truly a family business – one that everyone in the family hopes to see thrive over time.
Whenever you’re on Hilton Head Island and want a fabulous meal at a beautiful restaurant, stop by the Café at Wexford and ask Scott to make you and your sweetheart something special. You’ll be glad you did!

Ms. Julianne Davis managed Gallery Espresso since 1994 and purchased the business in October, 1996. Located at 6 East Liberty, directly across from the Desoto Hilton, the basement coffee shop had become a landmark for local businessmen, downtown residents and SCAD students. Gallery Espresso is the oldest coffeehouse in the Historic District and has been repeatedly voted “Best Coffeehouse” in Connect Savannah.
An opportunity was presented to Ms. Davis that she could not pass up. She was given the chance to move her business to a larger space just around the corner at 234 Bull St., the corner space on Bull and Perry Streets looking out to Chippewa Square. She was hesitant in changing what she felt was a trademark, the cozy basement feeling space with a fireplace but felt she could incorporate much of the Galley Espresso identity in a new location. The ground level location would increase visibility dramatically and Ms. Davis would have windows that open to allow an “open air” feel with tables located inside and outside on the sidewalk. The glass façade will also be a bright space during the evening hours.
She approached SBAC, who had helped her buy Galley Espresso in 1996 and asked for help in making this new dream come true. SBAC put together a low doc package and shopped it to several banks. Bank of the South agreed to fund the request using an SBA Low Doc loan. Gallery Espresso is now open and has, as a reporter wrote, “the best view of any restaurant in Savannah.”
Current products are coffee and teas, prepared specialty drinks, light fare breakfast foods and locally prepared desserts. Limited amount of whole coffee beans and imported teas by the tin are also available. Gift ensembles of related tea and coffee items are available. Wireless connection to the internet is available throughout the shop.

Tony Wiggins and Robin McArthur, the owners of Caraway Café, had one of those chance meetings that set into motion an idea both had shared for years. A friend had introduced Tony and Robin and they quickly found that opening a restaurant was the dream they both shared. This would have been easy to understand from Robin’s experience as a trained Chef, having worked at one of the leading restaurants in Charleston, no one would have guessed that it was also Tony’s dream.
Tony, a CPA, had always wanted to own his own small business and approached Robin with his idea. The business plan was created by both and presented to Coastal Bank. Coastal Bank was impressed with the desire and knowledge Tony and Robin both brought to the table and asked the SBAC to help by packaging a SBA Low Doc loan. An additional RLFD loan from the City of Savannah was also needed for a portion of the funding. Stephen George of SBAC met both Tony and Robin, put the package together and Coastal Bank submitted the request to the SBA. Approval soon followed from both the SBA and the SBAC loan committee and then Tony set about transforming a former small restaurant, on Paulsen and 66th streets into the Caraway Café. After many weeks of hard labor, Tony and Robin opened Caraway Café.
Caraway Café specializes in gourmet take out with a daily rotating menu. Open for lunch and dinner 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. M-F and till 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, customers can eat in the Café or take their order home and have a wonderful dinner that is like no other take out they have ever tasted. The Café has become very popular with the area hospital staff and draws customers from Ardsley Park, Kensington Park and downtown workers who zip in to grab a take out on their way home. They have become so popular that the hours have been extended and Saturday has been added. Now it is easy to say, “Tonight, I’ll do the cooking.”

Diana Morrison has worked her business selling advertising promotional items for 17 years, most recently from a small office on Montgomery Crossroads. The opportunity came to purchase a site on Montgomery Crossroads not far from her original location and she quickly purchased the land and began construction on a building built to her specifications. Unanticipated costs quickly depleted her contingency funds and Diana asked Ron Weller of BB&T if he could help.
Mr. Weller approached Small Business Assistance Corporation to see what could be crafted together. Staff at the SBAC decided that the request was ideal for a Small Business Capital Fund loan which is underwritten by SBAC. The Capital Fund is funded by a group of local banks that have formed a pool of funds that can be tapped when needed by the member bank. The bank bringing the loan request to the Fund must loan fifty percent of the request and the Capital Fund supplies the rest.
In this case the SBAC was also providing a CDBG guaranty to the loan from BB&T to Advertising Specialties. The loan request was presented to both the Small Business Assistance Corporation loan committee and the Capital Fund loan committee and both readily agreed that the project would take Mrs. Morrison and her business to the next level. The additional funds allowed the project to be completed and Advertising Specialties is now open at 402 E. Montgomery Crossroads.

Lorine started Love’s Daycare 14 years ago after realizing that her opportunity to advance to a Supervisor at a sewing factory in Statesboro, GA was limited. But, Lorine saw a business opportunity unfold right before her eyes. She noticed that several co-workers were looking for a structured childcare facility in which to leave their children, instead of with family members and friends. Lorine left her job of 13 years with the intention of filling that need.
She used profit sharing from her factory job to help pay for the equipment and supplies that she and her husband needed to start a day care business. They opened with three children, the maximum allowed without a license at that time. They saw a growth opportunity in this industry which led them to add a new room onto their home; Lorine enrolled in childcare classes and made necessary arrangements to be licensed by the State of Georgia to keep 18 children.
After reaching full capacity, the Loves applied for a micro loan to remodel a building they purchased two years earlier. SBAC referred them to the Georgia Southern Small Business Development Center where Lori Durden assisted Lorine with writing her business plan. SBAC made a MicroLoan to the Loves for this project. After the remodeling is complete, she will double her current capacity and hire one full time and one part-time employee, giving her 3 employees total. “The MicroLoan has played a big part in completing our second building,” says Lorine.

Beaufort Boat House was established in 1996 by the previous owner. The winters in New England over the last several years have been long, cold and heavy with snow. Craig and Dawn Freeman decided enough was enough and wanted to change their life style. Craig grew up spending his summers off the shores of Cape Cod and the Islands fishing and enjoying the ocean. The most logical way to continue that summer vacation type life style that they dreamed of was to move to the Low Country of South Carolina. When the opportunity arose to purchase the Beaufort Boat House, Craig and Dawn jumped at the opportunity, buying the business and the real estate.
With the assistance of Leo Story at The First National Bank of Nassau County and the Small Business Assistance Corporation the Freeman’s were able to put together an SBA 504 loan request to purchase the real estate that the boat dealership was housed in. Golf courses are constantly in need of maintenance beyond keeping the greens manicured. Especially during the winter months many courses suffer from erosion and deterioration. Additionally, the owners make changes to the courses and the greens to keep things new and interesting for their clientele.
Precision Golf provided sprig installation, built greens, installed fairway drainage, bunker development (sorry guys, they do that too), and tee construction. They had developed a good reputation and worked from Florida into the Carolina’s and were getting more and more inquiries. However they were concerned that during the off season their employees would leave for steady work elsewhere. This was a large problem in that these employees were experienced in the job requirements and would be difficult to replace.
Heather approached their bank, Darby Bank, for a working capital loan in order to keep their employees in place. Darby Bank identified an opportunity for SBAC to provide Heather with a SBA MicroLoan. SBAC reviewed the request and was able to put the needed capital in place not only saving jobs but keeping a business viable by allowing valued, experienced employees in place.

When he returned to his practice he was given the opportunity to move into an entirely different area of law, an opportunity which he took.
In need of working capital to support the change and make improvements to his office, Mr. Odell, Jr. turned to the Small Business Assistance Corporation. He outlined his loan requirements and the past events that brought him to his current needs.
The SBAC reviewed the request and was able to provide him with the funds necessary for Mr. Odell, Jr. to improve his office and building and support his move into a different area of law.

GUY FOULKE

HILTON HEAD, SC 29926

After 20 years of being employed in the food packaging industry, Guy Foulke decided it was time to open his own business to provide the same consulting services he had been providing – this time, though, the profits would come to him instead of a large corporate conglomerate. So, with that thought in mind, Guy opened Champion Systems, Inc. in 1993 to provide consulting services to businesses that utilize food packaging equipment as well as to facilitate a company’s acquisition of the actual equipment. Champion Systems, Inc. did so well that, in 2000, Guy formed another company, MapTech Packaging, Inc., with the mission of exploring and testing new ways to package perishable foods. Since inception, MapTech has successfully obtained patents for their innovations in machinery and equipment used in food packaging. Since both businesses are owned and operated by Guy, they were housed in the same building – at that time, a small unit in a local strip center.
Fiscal year 2002 saw tremendous growth for both businesses. So much so, Guy found himself in a position of needing a larger facility and needing it immediately if he planned to keep up with orders and customer requests. By the end of 2002, Guy had located the perfect building for the businesses – one that had sufficient office space, warehouse space, and refrigeration capabilities. Armed with a purchase contract, Guy contacted his banker about financing options. The bank, South Carolina Bank & Trust, suggested Guy utilize the SBA 504 loan program and put him in touch with SBAC. Guy’s SBA loan was approved and closed in early 2003 giving Guy the opportunity to move into the new, larger building and take advantage of the growth spurt both businesses were experiencing.
Guy has filled the building with additional employees, machinery, equipment, and products. In fact, Guy has already managed to completely fill the whole building with these two successful businesses.

GREEN FROG SLEEP CENTER
DEBRA AND TRACY GIBSON
7501 ABERCORN STREET
SAVANNAH, GA 31406
(912) 352-4001
Green Frog Sleep Center has been selling mattresses and futons to the Savannah community since 1981. Under the ownership and guidance of Debra Gibson, Green Frog Sleep Center has grown in leaps and bounds. Originally located in a small unit in a strip center on the Southside of Savannah, Green Frog Sleep Center was jam packed with beds, mattresses, futons, furniture and waterbeds. In order to “walk the maze” of inventory, customers had to pretty much test each mattress to get to the one they wanted. Not a bad sales tool, but a bit cumbersome for customers.
In early 2003, it became evident that the business had literally outgrown the facility. Debra, with her daughter and “right hand woman” Tracy, began the search for a larger facility. After spending 20 years in a building that is not visible from the main thoroughfare, not easily accessible, and had very limited parking, Debra and Tracy knew what they wanted for their new building.
It didn’t take long to find it: on the major thoroughfare of Savannah – Abercorn Street – with frontage on the street, therefore, visibility and accessibility, and ample parking. Having found the building, Debra and Tracy needed to get their financing. They contacted a local bank, First Chatham Bank, who suggested an SBA 504 loan for the building acquisition. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Green Frog Sleep Center moved into the new facility in the Spring/Summer of 2003. The showroom is much easier to navigate and holds more displays than Debra and Tracy ever had in the old facility. The building’s location on the major road through town has helped to sustain the growth the business had attained over the years – definitive support for the decision to move and purchase a new building.
If your back is bothering you, or you just want to try a new bed (or waterbed!), come by and talk with Debra and Tracy. They know their stuff and will be happy to help you find what you need, or want. Try them out, your sore back will thank you!

Tom and Nancy Ridgway, after deciding to retire from years in the corporate “rat race,” longed to find a business that they could own and operate from a beautiful setting in the Southeastern part of the country. This dream came true for the Ridgways in 1998 when they purchased Hilton Head Rentals and Golf, Inc. on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. The business had been in operation under the same manager/owner since it was founded in 1981. The owner decided that the time had come to move on, and so, Tom and Nancy acquired the business and began to work on improving not only the product offered, but also the infrastructure of the company.
Hilton Head Rentals & Golf is a real estate rental company that rents out houses, villas, and condos located on Hilton Head Island. Property owners not interested in dealing with the mundane details of renting their property, list it with Hilton Head Rentals & Golf and Tom and Nancy handle the rental of the property, the guest relations during their stay, and the clean up of the unit after the guest’s departure. Hilton Head Rentals & Golf allows many property owners the luxury of renting out their property without having to deal with the “nitty gritty” of the transaction.
With a focus on providing premier, upscale properties and superior customer service/guest relations, Tom and Nancy were able to triple reservations and double revenues. These increases called for additional staff and upgraded reservation systems. 2002 found Hilton Head Rentals 7 Golf “bursting at the seams” of their location. Tom and Nancy had to find a larger facility – and fast.
Tom and Nancy found the perfect building for their business, and it was across the street from their location. The building is two stories nestled in among old oak trees dripping with Spanish moss and has the look of an antebellum Southern mansion. Tom and Nancy negotiated the purchase and approached South Carolina Bank & Trust for financing. The SCB&T loan officer got the purchase approved with an SBA 504 loan, and referred the Ridgways to SBAC to get the SBA loan. SBA approved the loan in the beginning of 2003 and Hilton Head Rentals & Golf was in their new “mansion” to kick off the start of their season.
If you want to stay on the beautiful island of Hilton Head on the South Carolina coast, contact Tom and Nancy to find the perfect hideaway for you and your family. And when you travel down the island to get to your rental unit, be sure to take a quick peek at the Hilton Head Rentals & Golf building – you can’t miss it, it’s the antebellum mansion next to the ancient graveyard mid-island.

Gale Singer, owner of Circa Lighting, and Jennifer Grayson, owner of One Fish Two Fish, have know each other for several years having been neighboring shopkeepers in the Whitaker/Jones building in downtown Savannah. Gale and Jennifer struck a friendship over those years that comes from their love of the neighborhood where their businesses are located as well as a dedication to their clientele and customers. When the building came up for sale in the Fall of 2002, Gale and Jennifer sprang into action to preserve not only their business locations, but the cornerstone of their neighborhood. Gale and Jennifer immediately contracted to purchase the building. The successful operating history of both businesses made their purchase of the real estate a logical step to take – it would provide stability for the two stores – which would not have been the case had the building been purchased by another individual or party.
Gale and Jennifer began working with SunTrust Bank to obtain the financing for the building acquisition. SunTrust recommended that Gale and Jennifer obtain an SBA 504 loan for the building acquisition, and as such, referred them to SBAC to begin the process. An application was prepared and submitted to SBA which was subsequently approved. The transfer of ownership for the building occurred in the Spring of 2003 and has allowed both Gale and Jennifer to expand their businesses and make aesthetic changes to the building to enhance their business operations.
The Whitaker@Jones complex is home to other businesses – an art gallery and an antique shop to name a few. The complex fits quite nicely as the cornerstone to a residential neighborhood on a busy thoroughfare of downtown Savannah. Gale and Jennifer have painstakingly improved the image of the complex with beautiful landscaping that compliments both the businesses as well as the neighborhood. Their love of the building and its impact on the community is evident in the upkeep they have provided to the building.
Take a walking tour of Savannah that brings you through the historic district of downtown. You will inevitably pass by the Whitaker@Jones complex. Stop in at Circa Lighting to see the latest in period lighting fixtures or at One Fish Two Fish for unique gift items and delicious desserts and treats. Jatin and Hetal Patel grew up in a world of entrepreneurship watching their parents own and operate several successful hotels and other small business ventures. When their father was contacted about a hotel that was going to be put up for sale in Hardeeville, Jatin and Hetal began talking to him about their desire to be small business owners, specifically, hoteliers. The fact that the hotel in Hardeeville already had a franchise in place – Days Inn – and had consistently received high ratings from the franchisor made the purchase all the more attractive.
Jatin and Hetal, relatively new to the world of small business ownership, could and would draw from their parent’s experience as hotel owners/operators as well as the franchisor’s vast resources. Having grown up in the atmosphere of small business, Jatin and Hetal had been taught how to be successful entrepreneurs. All that was left at this point, was to take the plunge by signing the contract and obtaining financing.
Jatin and Hetal began working with their father to obtain the necessary financing to purchase their dream. They found People’s State Bank who referred Jatin and Hetal to SBAC for an SBA 504 loan for the acquisition of the real estate. The SBA application was submitted and approved in the winter of 2002. Jatin and Hetal closed on the acquisition and realized their dream of hotel ownership in early 2003. You can find them on site each day proudly overseeing the operations of their “dream.”
If you find yourself on the I-95 corridor, just crossing over the Georgia/South Carolina border and in need of a place to stop and rest, check out the Hardeeville Days Inn. Jatin and Hetal will be happy to host your overnight stay.

In 1992, John Menzies decided to use the large kitchen of his home to launch a new endeavor – his catering company. John envisioned himself preparing upscale food for the premiere events held in Savannah each year. Creative Catering, in John’s eyes, would be the name people would immediately think of when an event called for outside catering service. In the ten years since starting the business, John has succeeded in doing exactly what he set out to do. Creative Catering is a reputable, top-notch operation used for many of the upscale events held in Savannah.
John’s reputation in the marketplace as well as the industry has fueled the tremendous growth of his business. Still operating from the kitchen at his house – although is was industrial size – led to problems with the zoning codes and designations. You see, John’s home was located in an area that was not zoned for commercial businesses, nor would it ever be. So, John was given the choice: move the business operation or shut it down. Either way, it could not operate from his home any longer.
John contacted a friend regarding his predicament and was immediately referred to SBAC for an SBA 504 loan to build his new commercial facility. SBAC worked in conjunction with First Chatham Bank to obtain the 504 loan for this venture. SBA approved the request and construction began immediately. The new facility was completed at the beginning of 2003 with Creative Catering moving into it that January – with several parties to cater the weekend they moved in! John also utilized the SBAC Direct Loan program to get needed working capital for the business once it was moved into the new facility.
Creative Catering now boasts an industrial size kitchen preparation facility that makes John better able to serve his ever growing clientele. Efficiency and effectiveness have improved dramatically with the new facility, making Creative Catering the premier caterer in town.
If you have an event that needs to be catered, call John – he’d love to help you out. Just do so early, as he is so popular and in demand, he needs a little bit of advance notice to “get you on the books!”

Buddy Redd has been working on A/C units since he was old enough to “turn a wrench” to work on one. Having served as the principal of his family’s business for almost 10 years, Buddy decided it was time to go out on his own and start HIS own business. Since the family business was fraying at the edges with the death of Buddy’s father, the time was ripe for Buddy to venture into the world of entrepreneurialism.
Buddy was given the opportunity to purchase the building where he located his business – conveniently, as the building was owned by his mother. Buddy and his mother negotiated a fair purchase price for the building (substantiated by an independent appraisal), and Buddy was on his way to being not only an entrepreneur, but one who owned land for his new independent business venture. The acquisition of the building, where the business was already operating, was essential to the longevity and ultimate success of Buddy’s business. In a nutshell, if someone else bought the building from Buddy’s mother, there would be no guarantee that Buddy would be allowed to maintain his operation from that location.
Having been through the SBA process when his family owned an operated their business, Buddy turned to SBAC to seek assistance in preparing and then obtaining an SBA 7(a) loan. SBAC worked with Buddy to place the request and ultimately found Sunbelt Commercial Capital – which was able to provide the needed financing. Sunbelt, as a PLP SBA lender, was able to approve Buddy’s request rapidly and allow Buddy to become a small business owner/operator who owns the commercial real estate where his business operates. The SBA loan was closed at the beginning of 2003 and Buddy started the new year off with a head start.
If you own a building in Savannah – whether it is residential or commercial – and find that there is A/C work that needs to be done, call Buddy Redd. He will bring with him not only his knowledge and expertise of heating and A/C repair, but also the sincerity of a repairman that is seldom found, let alone seen, nowadays.

Tim and Cary Czarkowski, established Subway franchise owners here in Savannah, decided that the time had come to capitalize on the tremendous growth of Savannah’s Southside – by opening their fourth Subway franchise at the new Wal-Mart Supercenter complex. The Czarkowski’s, know in the Savannah marketplace and restaurant industry, were contacted by the owner of the strip center to see if they would be interested in the location. Once Tim and Cary did their due diligence on the location, the franchisor researched the area and readily approved the facility.
Already experienced in the SBA loan process, Tim and Cary approached SBAC seeking assistance in obtaining an SBA loan to fund the new location. Having already utilized the SBA 504 and 7(a) loan programs for their other locations, Tim and Cary had an initial application prepared at the beginning of the loan process. SBAC worked with Tim and Cary to locate a bank interested in funding the loan request for the Highway 17 location. In stepped SunTrust Bank, along with an approval from SBA, and the Czarkowski’s were on their way to becoming highly successful franchisees with four stores.
The SBA loan closed and construction began soon after. The project was completed in the summer of 2003 and the store opened shortly thereafter. Located in a strip center directly in front of one of Savannah’s busiest Wal-Mart locations (if not THE busiest in town), Tim and Cary’s Subway is ready to serve those in need of a quick meal before participating in the thrill of shopping at a Supercenter as well as those who need to pick up a sub for dinner on the ride home.
The success of Tim and Cary’s other stores is a direct result of their active involvement in the daily operations. So, if you feel the need to shop at the Supercenter, but find that you need sustenance prior to “the experience,” stop by Subway and see Tim and Cary, they’ll be happy to feed you and send you on your way!

Bonnie Retsas purchased a fledgling restaurant in the fall of 1997 with the high hopes of turning it around into an establishment that boasted a list of regular and repeat clientele. Thus was the transformation of a “soda shop” into Soho South Café. Located in the heart of the downtown Savannah historic district, Soho South Café is both a restaurant and a local art gallery where artists display their work in and among the facility’s set up. The art provides an ambience and atmosphere that no other Savannah restaurant can match. That, and the food is terrific – chocolate lovers need to check out the brownie sundae!
Bonnie was faced with a momentous decision in the winter of 2002. She wanted to expand her business operation to include catering and Sunday brunches in addition to the lunch hours she currently offered. In researching these possibilities, Bonnie learned that it would be more cost effective to purchase the building she operated in than to pay the increase in rent that the additional operating hours would cost her. As such, Bonnie began her quest to find financing for the purchase of the building.
Bonnie contacted Darby Bank & Trust with her request for financing. Darby Bank & Trust involved SBAC as the bank would only finance the real estate acquisition as an SBA 504 loan. The working capital that Bonnie needed for the expansion would be provided by Darby Bank if they could obtain an SBAC Guaranty. Bonnie worked with the local SBDC office to prepare an expansion plan and accompanying projections. When the plan and projections were complete and the bank commitments were in place, Bonnie’s 504 loan was submitted to the SBA for review and the guaranty request processed through SBAC. The loans were approved and closed shortly thereafter – much to Bonnie’s delight.
As you walk around the historic district appreciating the architecture and history of Savannah, stop by Soho South Café and partake of a chocolate brownie sundae and peruse the different painting, sculptures, and photographs – art – of Savannah while you’re there. Bonnie will love to see you!

Dr. Janvier, a licensed optometrist that has provided optical services on Hilton Head Island since 1994. Over the past several years, Dr. Janvier researched and then identified a void in the Bluffton marketplace when it comes to optometry services and the manufacturing of optical goods – eyeglasses and contact lenses. Already providing the optometry service on Hilton Head, Dr. Janvier set out to fill the need that existed in Bluffton.
Dr. Janvier researched the different optical companies, eventually settling on the Pearle Vision Center franchise. Pearle is a name that is established and recognized for the quality of the products produced. Dr. Janvier negotiated with Pearle Vision to obtain the territory that included Bluffton, as the closest providers of optical services are located as far away as Charleston and Savannah.
Once approved by Pearle Vision, Dr. Janvier began working with the Small Business Development Center to prepare a business plan that focused on the merging of his optometry services with the Pearle Vision Center. From the Small Business Development Center, Dr. Janvier approached Small Business Assistance Corporation for help in obtaining an SBA 7(a) loan to finance the new Pearle Vision Center in Bluffton.
SBAC prepared the request and brought it and Dr. Janvier to South Carolina Bank & Trust. Since SCB&T was located directly across the street from Dr. Janvier’s location, it was the most logical choice to provide financing. SCB&T thought so too! The loan was approved by the bank and the SBA and was funded in late 2002.

Fourteen years ago, M.J. Hennesy decided the time had come for her to own and operate her own business in the jewel of the Lowcountry of South Carolina. As a single mother trying to make her way in the world, both for herself and her children, M.J. wanted a business that she could operate and eventually bring her family into. M.J. found an established furniture store located mid-island on Hilton Head Island, and took the plunge into entrepreneurship.
Discount Furniture Warehouse, already successful, began to flourish under M.J.’s guidance. The business continued to grow and become an established supplier of quality furniture for both homeowners and second homeowners (condos and villas, and the like). In addition to furniture and mattresses, Discount Furniture Warehouse also sells draperies and carpet and everything in between.
M.J. has grown the business so well, that when her lease was set to expire at the end of 2002, she decided it was time to find a facility with a larger showroom that she could own and provide stability to the business operation. That building happened to be located right next door to her current facility. M.J. approached Lowcountry National Bank with a request for funding the acquisition of the building. Lowcountry National Bank referred M.J. to SBAC to obtain an SBA 504 loan for the purchase of the property.
The SBA approved M.J.’s request and the bank was able to fund the loan for the business to acquire its new building. M.J. enlisted the help of friends and family to move the inventory across the driveway and was ready to start the New Year – 2003 – in her new building. The new building has a much larger showroom where mattresses and furniture suites are on display and can comfortably be “tested” by customers.
Since MJ opened her facility on island she has discovered that business off island has grown significantly more than she had anticipated. MJ decided to open a second location off island. In doing so she has found it was not easy to locate a piece of property that would meet her needs
If you find yourself needing new mattresses, bedding, living room or dining room suites, or, for that matter, carpets, draperies and such, stop by and talk to M.J. You’ll appreciate her insight and interior decorating acumen that she has developed over the past 14 years of business ownership.

Sandy and Kip Lee moved to Savannah in order to realize their dream – owning and operating small business that constructs sunrooms and conservatories. With a limited amount of money to start the business, Sandy and Kip procured the franchise rites for the Savannah and Coastal Empire territory and set to making their business a success.
The initial location that they were able to lease was a small retail space in a local strip center. The landlord prohibited any improvements to the space as well as any outside signage. Not very conducive to a business that sells all glass sunrooms! But, Sandy and Kip persevered. They hung a banner between the poles in front of their store and rented a billboard above the strip center. Kip began to sell sunrooms and the word of mouth spread. Sandy handled all the customer service needs and coordinated all the building permit requirements. In slightly over a year’s time, Sandy and Kip had established their new business on a strong footing in the community.
In early 2001, Sandy and Kip decided it was time to take their business to the next level. That level was to build a showroom in a stand-alone location. The building would have at least three of their showrooms attached to it, giving customers a true feel for the product – not standing inside a sunroom under the roof of a strip center. They wanted to build a “showcase palace.”
Sandy and Kip approached SunTrust Bank to seek financing for this request. Their banker referred Sandy and Kip to the SBDC to prepare an expansion plan and to SBAC to obtain the necessary financing for the project. The SBAC representative assisted Sandy and Kip in obtaining an SBA 504 Loan and a Savannah Regional Small Business Capital Fund Loan to build their new building and an SBA 7(a) loan for their working capital needs.
If you ever want to stand in an all glass room, in the heat of the summer, and still feel cool, stop by the Four Seasons sunroom and check out their product. It is truly amazing!

SAVANNAH, GA 31401

After being laid off by Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, after twenty years of loyal service, Joan Clabbers decided it was time to visualize her dream and then “go get it!” While employed by Gulfstream, Joan was responsible for inventory control and all hardware items utilized by the company. Using her knowledge and experience, Joan began talking with an independent hardware store operator on the Southside of Savannah. In talking with him, Joan discovered that there was a niche market in downtown Savannah that was just waiting for someone to fill it. Joan’s advisor, the other independent owner, told Joan that he too, at one point several years ago, planned to open a store downtown but never quite got around to it. He also suggested that Joan follow her dream – armed with all her experience – and fill that niche; that he would be pleased to serve as her advisor and counselor in operating a store. Such was the beginning of Uptown Gardening and Hardware.
Joan worked with the local SBDC office to prepare a business plan and projections for her new venture. She then met with a banker at SunTrust Bank who suggested that Joan work with the SBAC to prepare an SBA Low Doc application. While in the midst of the process and paperwork, Joan lost the lease on her original location. Not to be deterred, she began searching for another, better location. The one she found is in the heart of the residential district of downtown Savannah. What better place to be? Where people can walk a couple of blocks and get the tools, supplies, and gardening utensils they need AFTER they get home from work. Joan decided that in that neighborhood, she needed to open later in the day and stay open into the early evening to serve her target market – her neighbors.
Joan’s SBA Loan was approved and closed shortly thereafter. Uptown Gardening and Hardware had its Grand Opening celebration in the middle of November 2001. Joan, once asked how she planned to finance this venture, answered “on my good looks and charm!” Joan’s charm has already endeared her to the neighborhood making her customers feel welcome to come in and look and chat whenever they want.

Ashley and Sheila experienced the burnout that many public school professionals do and decided that their mission in life was to operate a daycare center for children from 6 weeks old to 12 years old.
Such was the auspicious beginnings of The Learning Treehouse. Once the decision was made to leave the public school system, Ashley and Sheila began planning their daycare and the things that would make it both different and special. Ashley and Sheila worked with the local SBDC office to prepare their business plan and projections. Their goal was to provide a quality, loving reliable facility for the people of Effingham County. As a bedroom community to Savannah, Effingham County is growing at a rapid rate and was grossly underserved in daycare facilities.
Their SBDC representative referred Ashley and Sheila to SBAC. Upon completion of the business plan and projections, Ashley and Sheila worked on completing an SBA application for both an SBA 504 Loan to construct the building and a companion 7(a) loan to furnish it and provide the initial working capital. BB&T’s branch in Rincon approved the requests and they were sent to the SBA for review.
SBA approval was received and construction began on the facility. Ashley and Sheila were able to bring their project “in on time” and “on budget.” Utilizing the all of their creativity as educators, Ashley and Sheila have created a brand new daycare facility that focuses on providing quality, consistent care for their neighbors, friends, and families. The facility opened in September 2001 and already has an extensive waiting list for infants and toddlers. The word is out!
Stop by The Learning Treehouse and take a look at the wonderful environment that these two ladies have created for OUR children – OUR future!

Tybee Island Amusement Park was started in 1968 with an SBA loan to purchase the rides and necessary equipment. After 30 years of providing entertainment to summer visitors, Gene Glisson decided that the amusement park had seen better days and that the real estate would be put to better use as a motel. This decision was based on the increasing numbers of visitors to the island as well as the lack of new accommodations for them on the island.
Gene decided to auction off the amusement park assets and construct a new motel with a restaurant on the property. In order to do this, Gene needed an SBA 504 loan for the construction project and an SBA 7(a) loan to furnish the motel and provide the initial working capital for operations. Gene applied for, and received these loans in 1998. Construction was started shortly thereafter, and was completed in time for the Summer 2000 season on Tybee Island.
The new Tybee Super 8 is located right on The Strand and is highly visible, just like the former amusement park was. Gene Glisson is always available to “meet and greet” visitors to the island and recommend a good steak dinner.

Amy Spurlocks’ original concept of a store selling used college textbooks with some art supplies soon changed when she moved from her first location at Broughton St. and Abercorn St. The first store opened in 1995, and was somewhat less than 200 square feet. In 1996, using an SBAC guaranty, First Union National Bank funded a loan that helped Ms. Spurlock move to 14 W. Broughton St., which is a 1600 square foot facility. The additional space allowed the art supply inventory to be increased dramatically, which also prompted a new name for the business: PRIMARY ART SUPPLY.
Specializing in art supplies needed by the students at Savannah College of Art and Design, Ms. Spurlock became the dominant provider of art supplies in the downtown area. Growth and an increased staff came quickly as Ms. Spurlock continued to offer more and more items for SCAD students. Success allowed Ms. Spurlock to purchase her building and renovate the second floor for yet another 1600 square feet of retail space. Primary Art now has a staff of 14, provides framing services, and has become a destination of choice for local artists as well as students of SCAD.
With two floors of retail space showing all the latest art supplies, and employees that are artists themselves (including Ms. Spurlock), Primary Art is THE place to purchase supplies and discuss techniques and art characteristics in the City of Savannah.

Where’d You Get That? That’s a catchy name for a furniture and clothing consignment store. This start up operation was begun by Ursula and John Gallagher. The couple moved from the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts just over two years ago. For over thirty years John and Ursula owned and operated a retail furniture store in Pittsfield. They sold the business about three years ago and moved to Beaufort, SC. The last time John was in Beaufort was during training at Parris Island. They bought a home in Beaufort and John got a job as a service manger for the local General Motors Dealership. Ursula worked part time for another consignment shop in downtown Beaufort. Knowing that Ursula could do better, she convinced John that the time was perfect to open her own shop. Retirement appears to have been short lived. Using the SBA 504 loan program and the assistance of SunTrust Bank, the Gallagher’s obtained financing to construct retail store, just down the street from the Main Gate to MCAS Beaufort, in the highly traveled area of Port Royal. On a recent visit to the store, customer traffic was high and inventory filled the shop. Ms. Gallagher was working the store and Mr. Gallagher was just arriving to deliver a sofa that was being consigned for sale. Mrs. Gallagher stated that business was very brisk and anticipates a strong fall and Christmas season. My wife purchased a sweater and top while at the store and the very next morning at school she was asked “Where’d You Get That?”

The signs along the highways coming into Savannah say “Hippest Hotel in Town.” That’s the impression you get when you see the Thunderbird Motel for the first time. The borrowers David Gardner and Bill O’Brien, both New England transplants, had a vision of what the old “art deco” motel should look like. Using the SBA 504 loan program with the assistance of Darby Bank and Trust, David and Bill bought the old hotel and breathed new life into the Oglethorpe Avenue location. David has many years of motel experience and Bill has the experience in rehabbing old buildings. Together they have set a new standard to the motel business that surrounds Savannah College of Art and Design. SCAD couldn’t do any better and they are the premiere restorer of real estate in the City of Savannah.
New colors, new carpet, new furniture and an update to the services that a hotel can offer have brought this mid 50’s motel into the twenty first century.

Ms. Agnes Yao, with her late husband formed the corporation Oriental Trading Company, Inc. in 1987. Oriental Trading Company, Inc. does business as Sunrise Restaurant which serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week. The most recent activity was the acquisition of raw land and the construction of a new facility on the expanding Chatham Parkway. This is the fourth location that the family has opened since incorporation. They still retain operation of three of the four locations. These restaurants have earned an excellent reputation in the communities they are located. Mrs. Yao has always had a knack of finding good locations to open her restaurants. This is proven by the success of each of the locations.
The newest location is on Chatham Parkway in Savannah. This roadway has just recently become more active in development. In conjunction with the opening of Sunrise Restaurant, the local newspaper the Savannah Morning News opened its’ new plant almost across the street. Many other businesses are relocating to this side of town.
With the assistance of the Small Business Assistance Corporation and First Chatham Bank, the Yao’s were able to use the SBA 504 loan program to acquire the land and build a 10,000 square foot building to house their business. It appears that Sunrise Restaurant will continue its sixteen year success as Savannah’s premiere breakfast establishment.

Pat Tuttle worked for The City of Savannah for almost thirty years before starting Hospitality Tours and Gifts in 1994. Pat began working in the tourism industry, on a part time basis in 1990, as a Tour Guide for Old Savannah Tours. She fell in love with the tour business and began planning her own leap into the business of providing tours in Savannah. Pat made that leap into entrepreneurship in 1994 by utilizing an SBAC Guaranty loan to purchase one tour bus. And such was the beginning of Hospitality Tours of Savannah – the specialists in “The Book” tours.
Pat was the first person in the tourism industry to recognize a “niche” in the downtown market of Savannah when the book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil became a best seller. As a native of Savannah, and experienced tour guide, Pat realized she could parlay her talents as a guide, along with her personal knowledge of the actual Savannians portrayed in “The Book,” into a profitable business. Pat’s “Book” tours were so popular to out of town guest, that she purchased three additional busses and a van to accommodate Savannah visitors interested in seeing the city. Pat also began providing a walking tour of the city.
In1996, Pat leased a location on Bull Street to open a combination business office and gift shop. The gift shop not only provided a central base of operations, but it also improved the revenues of the business because Pat made it the last stop on all her tours. Visitors are able to purchase Savannah items such as “The Book” (autographed copies from the author, a personal friend of Pat’s), Byrd Cookie Company Savannah cookies, voodoo dolls, and the like.
In 1998, Pat was given the opportunity to purchase a storefront where she could move her business and have a stable, long-term location. Pat used an SBA 504 loan to purchase the ground floor of the building, which currently houses Hospitality Tours and Gifts.
Utilizing an SBA MicroLoan, Pat was able to add additional inventory for her gift shop in 2000.
Hospitality Tours and Gifts has received the 1997 Savannah Tech Small Business of the Year Award, and the 1997 Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce Hospitality Business of the Year. Pat has been profiled on Knowledge TV, and has appeared in Southern Living Magazine, Sky Magazine, the New York Times, Le Figaro Magazine, the London Times, Arts and Entertainment on PBS and NBC’s Today Show.

Larry Downs began Savannah Metalworks, Inc. in 1985 after he recognized that the company for which he worked vastly underserved the marketplace for this industry. Using his knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, Larry began his own company to fill the void in the marketplace. Shortly after starting his business, Larry obtained a contract with a national company where Savannah Metalworks would provide all the sheet metal fabrication work that was needed for the national company to fulfill a contract with the U.S. Navy. This exclusive contract allowed Savannah Metalworks, Inc. to grow into a major competitor in the marketplace. So much so, that a larger facility was needed to produce the sheet metal. In 1997, Larry obtained an SBA 504 loan to construct a larger facility. The business currently resides in that location.
In mid 1998, the company was affected when the contract with the national company was slowly phased out due to the national company’s cessation of business with the U.S. Navy. The national company began to slow on their payments to Savannah Metalworks, thereby creating a cash flow problem for this small business. In order to fix this problem, Larry applied for, and received, an SBA 7(a) loan for working capital purposes. After receiving the SBA 7(a) loan, the business was able to “ride through” their transition into other markets without being negatively impacted.
Savannah Metalworks, with the SBA assistance, has been able to move into and maintain a strong position in the marketplace for sheet metal fabrication.

Mary Buckley started in the restaurant industry in Savannah in 1974 with Casa Maria’s Restaurant located Whitaker Street in downtown Savannah. Through several moves in the downtown corridor, Casa Maria’s eventually became Debi’s Restaurant and is located on State Street in the heart of downtown Savannah.
After having such success with Casa Maria’s Restaurant/Debi’s Restaurant, Mary was approached to start another restaurant to be located in a small building on the southside of Savannah. The building, according to the owner, would be an excellent location for a restaurant; however, it required an excellent restauranteur to make it successful. Mary took on the challenge and started Mary’s Seafood and Steakhouse. Mary’s is well known for the large portions and delicious meals they serve.
In 1998, the old Steak & Ale building on the southside of Savannah went up for sale and Mary knew that that location was where her growing restaurant business needed to be. With the assistance of an SBA 504 loan, Mary was able to purchase the building and move her on-going restaurant operation into the bigger facility. The SBA 504 loan allowed Mary Buckley to expand her already successful business, as well as own her location so she doesn’t face any rent increases or lease terminations.
Since moving into the new location, Mary’s Seafood and Steakhouse regularly has a line out the door of patrons waiting for tables. Mary’s Seafood and Steakhouse still serves generous portions and Mary’s famous bon-bons for dessert, the two things that made the restaurant popular over ten years ago in that small southside location.

PLANTATION CARRIAGE COMPANY
TAYLOR WATTS
1000 PRESIDENT STREET
SAVANNAH, GA 31401
(912) 201-0001
Taylor Watts began to envision Plantation Carriage Company - horses with red ribbons and plumage, drivers in the uniform of a genteel Southern plantation owner - long before the company offered its first tour of Savannah in April 2000.
For thirteen years, Taylor Watts worked for Old South Carriage Company in Charleston, SC. Taylor worked his way up in the company from a barn hand mucking out stalls on a daily basis to being the Manager and appointing people to muck stalls. Through this progression “up the ladder,” Taylor was exposed to every aspect of the horse drawn carriage business and industry.
In his capacity as Manager of Old South Carriage Company, Taylor recognized an opportunity for the business to expand into the Savannah area. The owner of the business was content to serve the Charleston marketplace and opted not to expand the business. That was Taylor’s big opportunity.
When Taylor began working on Plantation Carriage Company in 1999, he met with a representative from the Savannah Chapter of SCORE to prepare his business plan. After meeting with Mr. Arrowsmith, Taylor then worked with the local Small Business Development Center to prepare his financial projections. After working with Ms. Vos, Taylor approached the SBAC to prepare an SBA loan application.
Since Taylor is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War, he qualified for an SBA Pre-Qualification Loan. The SBAC submitted Taylor’s request to the SBA under that program and it was approved. SBAC then assisted Taylor in finding a bank to commit to the pre-approved SBA loan. That lender turned out to be Bruce Avant with First National Bank & Trust Company of Louisville.
In April 2000, Taylor gave his first tour by HIS company in Savannah – Plantation Carriage Company. Plantation Carriage Company caters to the tourists who are walking around City Market and see the beautiful horses and carriages and decide, on the spot, to take a carriage tour around the city. Plantation Carriage Company is the only horse drawn carriage company in Savannah that does not require reservations for tours. Walk up customers are their favorite kind! If you’re walking around Savannah, keep your eyes out for the carriages being pulled by the horses with the red plumage – they truly are a sight to see.

What do most retirees do? According to a report published in the Savannah Morning News, many go back to work. Such is Mr. Sherman Styles who retired from the military in 1994.
After retiring, Mr. Sherman Styles found it difficult to stay at home; thus he decided to really live his life. He graduated from college receiving an Associate Degree, started a pressure washing business, received a job as a truck driver and now owns his own trucking business. As he drove trucks as an employee, Mr. Styles’ entrepreneurial spirit rekindled, which motivated him to research the opportunity to drive for himself. This would result in an easy transition because he would continue driving for the same company making the same route.
His relationship with SBAC began in 2004 when he requested a MicroLoan for his pressure washing business. After that loan was dissolved positively, he returned for a second MicroLoan for Styles Trucking.
When Mr. Styles started Styles Trucking, he transported woodchips, bark and sawdust to wood/timber companies in the state of GA. Since then, he has expanded to transporting wood products to companies in four additional states: FL, AL, SC and NC.

Susan Jaffie has been operating a drink cart on Wright Square since 2003. Operating under the name The Bean Scene, Ms. Jaffee provided water, soft drinks and snow cones for hot and thirsty tourists and locals. Since she ran the cart year round, including the winter months, she also had hot chocolate available at that time.
Working the cart year round in the heat and cold and sometimes rain made Susan wish she had an indoor business, a shop that customers (and herself) could get out of the weather and have a place to sit down and rest. Unexpectedly her opportunity came not a block away from her cart when Maui Smoothie closed and the owner offered to sell her equipment and furniture.
Seeing her dream float tantalizingly in front of her eyes Susan came to the Small Business Assistance Corporation and began the application process. With less than six weeks till St. Patrick’s Day (the unofficial start of the tourist season) Susan worked on her business plan while working the cart on Wright Square. Once the business plan and loan application was completed she applied to the SBAC for business loan to purchase the business assets of Maui Smoothie and get enough to upgrade the equipment and spruce up the interior.
Actually, spruce up the interior, is woefully inadequate to describe what has transpired at 143 Bull Street. The interior is a bright green that invites the customer in to see the comfortable space in back near the magazine rack or the toys in the front to keep the smaller customers occupied. Serving an expanded menu of smoothies as well as coffee and some foods such as chicken salad sandwiches, Susan is working inside her dream and enjoying every minute of it. The WiFi service is welcomed by many of the regulars but the Girl Scouts that come in seem much more interested in the green smoothie that is available.
And, the cart is still on the square, after all someone might miss the green beacon of Bull Street now known as Smooth.

When was the last time you felt your Doctor was interested in you as a person and not the ailment you had at the time? Or when was the last time you felt your Doctor wanted to make a difference in the community and not a difference in his bank account?
Well, here is one. Dr. Wilbert Jenkins. Dr. Jenkins operates Jenkins Family Medical Practice out of the St. Pious Center at 705 East Anderson St. He opened the clinic in September of 2003 to assist those residents in the area. A former physician with the Air Force during Desert Storm, he brings a strong belief in a “people” oriented practice and reaching out to those in his community. Dr. Jenkins participates in community fairs, and other neighborhood meetings offering free health screenings and information.
While his office in St. Pious is small by the usual hospital standards, Dr. Jenkins wanted to be in the middle of his community, to be more accessible to those people who may not have transportation or who may not seek medical attention because of the difficulty involved when they do not have a family doctor.
Demonstrating his desire and drive, Dr. Jenkins outfitted the clinic, hired a nurse and a secretary using his own funds. He asked Capitol City Bank to assist him with the purchase of equipment in the office. Patrice Grant of Capitol City Bank asked Small Business Assistance Corporation if the SBAC could provide a guaranty for a loan Capitol City would make to Dr. Jenkins. The loan committee approved the request and Dr. Jenkins was able to continue working in the community that needs him.

Peter and Kassandra Keller have been marketing executives since graduating from college. Peter worked for a car wash supply company selling automotive washing supplies and Kassandra was a Pharmaceutical marketing executive. After graduating from college they moved to Florida. During their down time they would travel to the Lake Oconee/Lake Sinclair area to relax. After spending the past year searching for the right opportunity, the Keller’s found a car wash and lube center facility currently under construction and up for sale. The seller is a long time customer of Mr. Keller’s, having purchased car wash chemicals and equipment from Mr. Keller for years. In a casual conversation with the seller Mr. Keller mentioned he and his wife’s search for a business opportunity and the seller mentioned the new facility currently under construction. The location is excellent, right in front of a new Super Wal-Mart at the busiest intersection of Eatonton and the Reynolds Plantation. The seller constructed the facility with the intent of selling it as he is 70 years old and wants to divest himself of the work he currently has to do.
They were referred to SBAC by Joey McQuaig, a business broker who has used SBA loan products in the past. With the assistance of Peoples Bank of Eatonton, the Keller’s used the SBA 504 loan program to acquire the real estate. Kassandra Keller has continued to work for a Pharmaceutical Company. The Keller’s sold there house in Florida and moved to the Twin lakes area. Kassandra has discovered that the commute to the Atlanta airport is not that bad from Eatonton. Peter now stays home with the dogs and runs the car wash. They leased the lube center to an operator who had his business in another location in town. Peter has arranged for remote sales of car washes from several convenience stores that surround the Wal Mart Plaza.
In their new life in Georgia, both Peter and Kassandra have found the pace in the Lakes Region slower and certainly more relaxing. Peter says it’s like being on vacation everyday. Kassandra may disagree, having to continue on working on the road but states that within a year or two she foresees cutting back on her road trips and spending more time in Eatonton. From the activity observed around the car wash and lube center she may be right.

There are days when Stella Prescott wishes she hadn’t taken on the project of building a new stable facility in South Carolina. Trying to operate a riding school and stable operations at the same time of getting paddocks and pastures up to her standards may have been just too much to handle, but it is done and the end result is one of the finest riding and boarding facilities in the Southeast. There have been some pitfalls along the way. Convincing some of her boarders to continue to use her facilities that are a little further off island has been a challenge. The initial stable population dropped to levels Stella was not prepared to accept was difficult but with aggressive marketing and price reductions on boarding the stables are starting to fill up again.
The pastures, paddocks and riding rings are first class. Stella’s student population has continued at the same pace as the previous location. This is a testament to the fact that Stella Prescott is one of the best riding instructors in dressage and jumping in the nation.

Ms. Sessoms, a lighting designer for 22 years had a desire to operate her own business full time. She had been running her business on a part time basis and working full time for a local business. As a single mother is was a big and intimidating step but she felt the time was right. She worked the Small Business Development Center to put together a business plan and then turned to the Small Business Assistance Corporation for the financing. SBAC recognized that the request could best be processed under an SBA Low Doc loan and set about putting together the application. Once complete, SBAC took the application to area banks with the hope of finding one willing to fund the request with SBA backing.
Darby Bank reviewed the request and after meeting Cyndee sent the application to the SBA where it was approved.

Stacey Horner had spent 12 years in the travel industry and was currently working at an agency on Wilmington Island. When the opportunity to purchase the agency was presented to Stacey by the owner, Stacey jumped at the opportunity presented to her.
Ms. Horner contacted the Service Corp. of Retired Executives and began work on her business plan. During the development of the business plan the tragic events of September 11th clouded the issue and raised concerns about the survival of the travel industry in the immediate future. The SCORE counselor had faith in the industry rebound and in Ms. Horner and guided Stacey as she completed her plan. SCORE then introduced her to Small Business Assistance Corporation for possible funding.
Using the SBA Micro Loan program the SBAC was able to secure the funding and allow Stacey to purchase her own business.

Supergoose Sports started out in 1997 as a “pick up” inline hockey league out at Lake Mayer on the Southside of Savannah. The league consisted mainly of youths with some adult teams competing in the evenings. Mr. Greg Eng transformed the concept of a “pick up” league into an organized sport for youths and adults that had not only practice, but competition at the Lake Mayer location. As the youth league grew, so did the adult league, including many of the fathers of the youth leaguers. Two of those adult members are Mr. Tim Smith and Mr. Rob Lanoue.
As the leagues began to grow, Greg, Tim and Rob began discussing the possibility of finding a permanent, indoor home for the youth and adult leagues. If they could find an indoor facility, members and spectators would be spared the both inclement weather and bugs at the outdoor facility. In addition, the facility could be available for other sports like soccer and lacrosse. The idea of an indoor facility that would be year round had strong support in the leagues as well as the community.
Greg, Tim and Rob found a facility that would serve their purpose – an old indoor skating rink. With that in place, they began putting together their business plan and working with local lenders. They contacted SBAC to obtain financing through the SBA 504 loan program. SBAC put them in touch with The Coastal Bank that approved and funded the bank portion of a 504 loan.
The facility was completed in 2002 and is open for indoor hockey, soccer and lacrosse leagues. Supergoose Sports has hosted several hockey tournaments and has proven itself to be a premier venue for regional as well as national competitions.
Stop by Supergoose Sports to see how inline hockey, soccer and lacrosse are played indoors. Greg, Tim and Rob will be proud to show off the facility. Take my word for it, it beats sitting in the rain cheering a team on. Not to mention, those Savannah sand gnats can’t get you when you’re inside!

Sandra McLain opened Angel’s Child Care in her home over eight years ago “on a wing and a prayer” and three children. Since that auspicious beginning in 1994, Sandra has upgraded her facility to meet building codes to allow here to increase her enrollment. At the beginning of 2002, Angel’s Child Care had a full enrollment of 18 students, before and after school programs for older children and a long waiting list for infants and toddlers. It was time to expand the business and locate another facility.
With the help of the local Small Business Development Center, Sandra prepared a business plan for the new facility to make sure that the expansion was truly the best option for her business. Once that was completed, Sandra located the property she wanted to purchase for this expansion. Sandra found real estate in the heart of the City of Savannah that is easily accessible to downtown Savannah as well as the medical arts center of the city — the two busiest locations as far as employment is concerned. Sandra decided that she could offer an unique service to the medical arts area — flexible hours for people in the medical profession. The new facility will handle the overflow from the existing center as well as provide a referral outlet for parents interested in Angel’s Child Care.
Sandra completed the expansion plan process and approached SunTrust Bank for financing on the request. SunTrust put Sandra in touch with SBAC to package the SBA 7(a) loan request. The SBA approved the loan and Sandra was on here way to expanding an already successful business.
Angel’s Child Care now offers two facilities — the original one in Sandra’s home and the new one on 39th Street. Both centers provide top notch child care in loving environments. And, you can find Sandra moving between to the two facilities checking on her “children” on a regular basis.
Stop by Angel’s Child Care and Enrichment Center on 39th any time you want to play around with some happy energetic kids!

Jennifer and Jim Salandi decided that, after 25 years in the corporate world, it was time to “retire” and operate a bed and breakfast inn. After many years of travel — most often staying at bed and breakfast inn, the Salandis had definite ideas of what they liked, wanted and needed to do with the inn that they would one day operate. The Salandis traveled all over the country to find the right city for their inn, and fell in love with Savannah. With the task of choosing a city complete, the hard work began — choosing an existing bed and breakfast inn.
Jennifer and Jim began to visit Savannah regularly in order to “try” the different inns. The purpose of the visits was to get a first hand view of the inns to see which appealed to them most. Jennifer and Jim decided that the upscale, larger inns appealed to their idea of what they wanted. In an offbeat, offhand conversation with the owner of the Ballastone Inn, Jennifer and Jim learned that she was willing to discuss the possibility of selling the inn to the Salandis. That was when Jennifer and Jim knew that their decision had finally been made — Ballastone Inn appealed to them in a way no other Savannah inn did.
The Salandis began working with local lenders to acquire the inn. They were referred to SBAC for an SBA 504 loan for the purchase of the real estate and business. Darby Bank & Trust is SBAC’s partner in the SBA 504 loan that the Salandis obtained for the purchase of the inn.
The Salandis purchased the inn in June of 2002 and began the process of “sprucing up” the building and its surroundings. The Salandis have succeeded in transforming an already beautiful building and inn into a gorgeous representation of what the City of Savannah prides itself on — a grand dame of the South. The tender loving care that the Salandis have showered on the inn are evident — lush green plants and colorful flowers adorn the front and side courtyard. There are flags out front that attest to the heritage of the building, the city, and the owners.
Jennifer and Jim are proud of their new acquisition and that pride shows in every aspect of the Ballastone Inn. The Salandis are enjoying their new lives as innkeepers are there to greet and host guests at breakfast, lunch, tea time and cocktail hours. If you find yourself in Savannah and want to see what the “old South” looks like, stop by the Ballastone and ask Jennifer of Jim for a tour — they’d love to share their enthusiasm with you!

PJ and Karen Patel, successful owners of the Sagar Food Mart — a convenience store on the Southside of Savannah — decided three years ago that they wanted to expand their repertoire to include a hotel. So began the search for the right property to house this new business enterprise. After two years, the property was finally located — a 30-year-old hotel located on the Southside of Savannah right off Interstate 95 and Highway 204.
PJ and Karen began working with the local Small Business Development Center (through the University of Georgia system) to prepare a comprehensive business plan and financial projections. Once that was completed, PJ and Karen began working with the SBAC to prepare an SBA 504 loan application for the purchase and renovation of the facility and a 7(a) loan for new furniture for the facility. SBAC helped the Patels to find their bank — First National Bank & Trust Company of Louisville.
PJ and Karen purchased the Red Carpet Inn at the end of 2001 and began to renovate the first of three buildings. In January of 2002, the Patels were able to change the “flag” of the hotel to a more recognized name: Travelodge. By March of 2002, the first building was completed and construction began on the second building. PJ and Karen were able to begin generating revenues with the first 35 rooms while they worked on refurbishing the other 50 rooms.
Construction on all three buildings was complete during the summer of 2002 with the facility open for business and looking great. PJ and Karen are on site daily to greet and assist guests who are there to see the historic City of Savannah as well as road weary travelers needing to stop for the night.
Stop by the Travelodge if you find yourself on Interstate 95 passing through Savannah. PJ and Karen will be happy to show off their lodging accommodations — maybe even rent you a room!

Hardeeville, SC 29927

As you drive along Interstate 95 and approach the town of Hardeeville, South Carolina, you can’t miss the Howard Johnson hotel. Newly renovated, and located right next to the Interstate, it is one of the best hotels in the area — one that boasts 10 hotels and 18 restaurants. Name recognition and accessibility alone make the Howard Johnson hotel one of traveler’s favorites.
The hotel is owned and operated by Rajesh (Raj) and Beena Patel. Raj is one of the five initial owners of the real estate, having bought out his partners in 2001 after the major construction was completed. The initial owners obtained seller financing to purchase the real estate and bank financing to fund the renovations. Both notes’ maturities were the same and required attention in early 2002.
As the new “sole” owner of the hotel, Raj began to review his financing options and decided, with his bank’s assistance and guidance, that an SBA 7(a) loan was his best choice. Armed with the support of his banker from People’s State Bank, Raj approached SBAC to ask for assistance in preparing the 7(a) application.
The loan package was prepared, submitted, and approved by the SBA. This allowed Raj to get long term financing for a real estate project from a bank that otherwise would not have been able to do it. Since the loan has closed and traffic on the Interstate has increased — especially with more people traveling by car these days — the Howard Johnson hotel has seen a steady increase in patronage.
If you find yourself weary of watching the white lines on Interstate 95 and happen to be passing through the town of Hardeeville, stop in and check out the new rooms and get a good night sleep at the Howard Johnson.

Chuck St.Arnaud has been at the helm of Systems Connect since it started in 1995 as a Bulletin Board service on the Internet. The business grew at a tremendous rate and became an Internet Service Provider for individuals and businesses in Savannah and the surrounding areas. Systems Connect designs websites, provides state of the art computer equipment and Internet Fiber Networks for businesses all across the nation as well as its local market - high technology from a Savannah small business.
When Chuck started the business, he did not anticipate the rapid growth that would occur as technology changed at a rapid rate. He strived to keep Systems Connect at the top of the peak in advances so as to provide the best service in town. Chuck succeeded beyond his expectations, but also needed working capital to fund the continued growth.
Chuck began working with his bank to obtain an SBA loan for financing to fund the growth of his business. Darby Bank brought SBAC in to package the SBA 7(a) request, and the rest, as they say, is history. Chuck was approved for the loan and Darby funded it shortly thereafter.
Not too long after that, Chuck and Systems Connect were name Small Business of the Year by the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce. Fitting recognition for Chuck’s commitment to the business and his company’s commitment to its mission and goals.

Ben and Bob Anderson, twins, not only spent their lives looking like each other, they have the same career interests. Ben and Bob are both Licensed Opticians — that allows them to make eyeglasses and sell contact lenses. Both Ben and Bob were employed as Optical Managers for local Wal-Mart stores when they decided it was time to make money for themselves, not someone else. Since both Ben and Bob possess licenses for optical services, it made sense for them to open their own eyecare facility.
Once the business venture was determined and agreed upon, Ben and Bob set out to find the perfect location for their new business. Their first attempt did not pan out the way they wanted. It did, however, give them the opportunity to find a strip center under construction that was looking for tenants. The center is located in one of the fastest growing suburbs of Savannah and is currently underserved in the eyecare arena. Perfect for Ben and Bob’s new business venture.
Ben and Bob approached SBAC for assistance in preparing an SBA 7(a) package to be brought to local banks for review. The process proved successful when The Coastal Bank approved the request and sent it on to the SBA. The SBA also approved the loan and the Andersons were on their way to being in business.
The strip center was still under construction when Ben and Bob received their funding, so they were able to tailor their space to their business needs. Being the first tenants in that location allowed the Anderson brothers to create the right atmosphere from the beginning instead of having to renovate someone else’s vision of retail space. The building was complete in February of 2002 and the Andersons opened their doors.
Specializing in family eyecare — they have an optometrist on sight to do vision tests — and the Anderson’s create the glasses or contact lenses on site. Not outside people to deal with or to wait on for adjustments. It is what family eyecare — for both the customer and the business owner — used to be.
If you find that some type of correction in required in your vision, go visit Ben and Bob Anderson — they’ll be happy to SEE you!

Dr. John Neal, fresh from interning with the Falcons chiropractor, came to Savannah for the purpose of purchasing and existing practice of a long time Savannah physician. This dream became a reality for Dr. Neal in 1997 when he purchased an existing practice with the assistance of an SBA 7(a) loan. From these auspicious beginnings, Dr. Neal formed the Neal Chiropractic Wellness and Rehabilitation Center.
Dr. Neal’s original plan was to purchase the business, and the, over time, purchase the building. Dr. Neal envisioned a center that was open and welcoming and provided services not limited to his chiropractic practice. Since taking over the business, Dr. Neal’s dream continued to grow and take form — take a out a few walls to make rooms bigger, open the waiting area and make it more patient friendly, a new coat of paint, all things to spruce up the building. Once the building was improved, Dr. Neal would move to his next step — increasing the services available. Massage, Nutritional Counseling, Physical Rehabilitation — these are the things Dr. Neal wanted to add to his practice in order to round it out and better serve his patients. His dream became a reality in 2001.
Dr. Neal approached the SBAC for assistance in obtaining an SBA 504 loan to purchase the building he had been renting since 1997 and to make the appropriate renovations for it to fit his vision. Along with the SBA 504 loan, Dr. Neal obtained, an RLFG loan to fund the working capital needs of hiring additional staff for the new facility. Dr. Neal’s dream, once again, became a reality in the winter of 2001.
Neal Chiropractic Wellness & Rehabilitation Center is now fully operational offering a variety of services aimed at improving the overall well being of Dr. Neal’s patients. So, if you have a nagging “twinge” in YOUR lower back, make an appointment to see Dr. Neal. He promises to “straighten you out!”

Shill and Monty Won were anxious to leave the big city of New York and start a new career. After spending 27 years with Citibank, Mrs. Won was anxious to move to Savannah and open her own small business. Mr. Won moved ahead of his family so he could locate suitable housing and employment. He began working with a seafood wholesaler who informed Mr. Won that his business did not reach the full market. As such, there was opportunity for someone to open a seafood market on the other side of town to fill a void in the marketplace.
Mr. Won had made contacts within the industry and learned much about seafood and the Savannah marketplace. After a period of time, Mr. Won felt the timing was right to make the move and open his own business.
Mrs. Won moved to Savannah shortly thereafter, and together, they found a building for sale on Martin Luther King, Blvd. Pooling their resources, Mr. and Mrs. Won approached the SBAC for help in completing the financing needed to purchase the building, renovate it and open the store. The SBAC was able to use the City of Savannah Revolving Loan Fund to provide the capital needed to complete the project and open the doors. Thus bringing a much-desired business to an inner-city neighborhood.

LARRY BRYANT AND DARIN VAN TASSELL

STATESBORO, GA 30458

Larry Bryant and Darin Van Tassell envisioned a family oriented recreational facility that would cater to the Statesboro, Bulloch County community. This dream of a first class, safe and affordable recreational site was the auspicious beginning of Hackers Golf Park. Originally opened for business in 1998, Hackers Golf Park consisted of a pro shop and a driving range. Hackers was immediately accepted and applauded by the community and Larry and Darin began to make a reputation for the business. Hackers filled a very obvious void in the marketplace, and has done so very successfully. Since opening in 1998, Hackers has hosted a variety of functions, classes and even tournaments at its state of the art facility.
In late 2000, Larry and Darin decided to take Hackers to the next level — a miniature golf course. The addition of a miniature golf course would further fill a niche in the market as there was no such facility in Statesboro. Once again armed with a dream, Larry and Darin began to work on making it come true. They began working with the Small Business Development Center to prepare a business plan and financial projections for the new miniature golf park. Once that information was completed, Larry and Darin approached the SBAC for help in obtaining an SBA 7(a) loan to finance the project. SBAC was able to help Larry and Darin get a bank commitment and then, an SBA approval.
The Hackers Miniature Golf Course opened in March of 2001 and has been a roaring success. Larry and Darin have enlarged the parking lot, and on weekend nights, it still isn’t big enough to accommodate all their customers.
If you are in Statesboro and have a yearning to “hit a few balls,” stop in at Hackers and see Larry and Darin. They’ll be happy to show off the facility!

Jessica Saari always wanted to own her own business — especially one in the reprographic industry where she has been employed for the past twelve years. After twelve years of working hard and learning the machinery, quality of prints, and the importance of customer service, Jessica decided that it was time to find a business of her own so she could be working so hard for herself and not someone else. Through a friend that used to work with Jessica and started his own business, Jessica found an existing business in Bluffton South Carolina that was for sale. The business had been in operations for approximately 5 years and the owner was ready to retire. What better opportunity — to purchase an existing business on a “turn-key” basis!
Jessica’s friend referred her to SBAC to obtain an SBA loan to finance the purchase of the business. Jessica also worked very closely with the local SBDC to prepare a business plan and projections for HER new business. During that process, Jessica insisted that the projections were far too conservative and that her years of experience in the industry had to be worth something in the planning process. That said, Jessica plowed ahead with the plan and projections on a very conservative basis.
Jessica approached SBAC to request an SBA Low Doc loan to finance the purchase. With the assistance of SBAC, Jessica found First National Bank of Louisville and the financing transaction took shape. The SBA loan was approved in September 2001 and Jessica closed on the loan and the purchase of the business in October 2001. Being a “turn-key” operation, Jessica has come into the business, upgraded the machinery — and, therefore, the quality of copies produced — and literally blown away her projections!
If you need blueprints or high quality copies, stop by Jessica’s store in Bluffton. But, be sure to bring a treat for Petunia, the official canine greeter of the company!
